Should You Skate This Summer?

Girls Hockey Summer SkatingNow that tryouts are done and summer hockey is on the horizon, I have been receiving a lot of questions from girls hockey parents asking about getting their daughters on the ice this summer. Can a power skating camp actually improve skating technique over a short time period? Is going to hockey camp over the summer really worthwhile? Here’s what I think…

I typically recommend power skating for girls hockey players during the summer when I am confident it is an instructor that really teaches the players technique, as opposed to skating them into the ground. Not to say that they shouldn’t work hard (they should), but there is a HUGE difference between “bag skating” players until they can barely move and actually teaching players to skate with better technique and efficiency. Attending powerskating schools and hockey camps MIGHT make you a better player, but I am going to let you in on a little secret.

Using a proper off-ice training program this summer is GOING to make you a better player.

The road to success in the women’s hockey world is paved with hard work. Playing the game is the fun part. Training off the ice is just plain hard work. Working as hard off the ice as you do on the ice takes a level of commitment and dedication that most girls hockey players don’t have.

And that’s why using a proper off-ice training program this summer will allow you to separate yourself from your competition.

The players who truly want to improve know that they have to put in their time away from the ice in the summer to be the best on the ice in the fall. Most girls hockey players and parents don’t understand this. They think they can get to the highest levels of the sport based on their skills alone. And they couldn’t be more wrong.

On-ice skill will only get you so far. It’s what you do off the ice that allows you to stand out and get noticed.

One of my mentors, and world-renowned off-ice training specialist, Mike Boyle, says it best:

“The road to (elite hockey) should go right through a weight room. I know this sounds old fashioned but, it’s true. If your goal is to play at the elite level, then get ready to play. You can try to show everyone how good you are in a few camps or tournaments or, you can actually work at getting better and preparing for the seasons that really matter….Spend the summer trying to get better (off the ice) so coaches will notice you (on the ice).”

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

You can spend more time on the ice and hope to get better this summer.

Or you can train off the ice and guarantee that you take your game to the next level.

And the Complete Training System is the program that will help you get there.
