How To Shoot A Better Wrist Shot

Now that the off-season is officially here and the weather is starting to get nice outside, many girls hockey players are going to be heading into the driveway to work on their shot. The truth is they are going to focus most of their time and effort on their slap-shot, when what they really need to be doing is working on their wrist shot. I put this short video together to show the the BIG SECRET to having the most powerful and accurate wrist shot possible.

There are two key things that girls hockey players must focus on when practicing their wrist shots this summer.

1. Hands Away: Make sure that you get your top hand away from your hip and get your hands out in front of your body. If you keep your hands in tight, you won’t be able to follow through properly on your wrist shot – decreasing your power and your accuracy.

2. Push Pull: That’s the action you need to think about doing with your arms when you take your wrist shot. Pull your top hand towards you and push your bottom hand away. Start practicing this push-pull action slowly, making sure you are doing it properly, and then work on snapping your wrists more forcefully while taking your shot.

And remember – practice doesn’t make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. You are much better off going out and shooting 20 perfect wrist shots than 200 bad ones. Think quality instead of quantity.

Practice the push-pull of your wrist shot this summer and you’ll be filling the net in the fall.

Work Hard. Dream BIG.
