Teaching Hockey IQ & Coaching Team Iceland

This is one of my favorite coaching chats EVER and the conversation that connected me to my newest coaching adventure with the Iceland National Women’s Ice Hockey teams.

In this awesome chat with Greg Revak of Hockey Arsenal on his Hockey IQ podcast, we cover a lot of ground.

WARNING: It’s a LOOOOONG chat. The podcast is 80+ minutes long – which probably doesn’t surprise you if you’ve ever talked hockey with me before 🙂

Here are a few things of the things we discussed:

  • Starting competitive hockey at age 13, having 10+ NCAA D1 full scholarship offers by age 18 and trying out for Team Canada by age 19
  • The importance of puck possession and the “backpack” player
  • Throwing away the wipe-board and whistle
  • My strange breakout experiment
  • Why I love wingers playing their off wing
  • Playing tape to space hockey
  • Using constraints within coaching to develop hockey IQ
  • Moving away from outcome-driven to process-driven hockey
  • Goal setting & goal getting for players and teams (to build CONFIDENCE)
  • The “ice cream cake” check-mark system
  • The importance of being the “lead dog”

I will eventually break this chat down into little bite sized pieces to make it easier to digest. But in the meantime, listen to it on your drive to the cottage, during your next workout or when you’re outside working on your tan.

I hope you find a few golden nuggets that spark some ideas and joy as we accelerate into the start of the season.

And please feel free to pass this along to any friends, teammates, parents or coaches who might enjoy my ramblings 🙂
