Marrying The Shot & Step

Since 2020, I’ve run hundreds of sessions both on and off the ice focused on teaching players how to shoot in stride more effectively. Today, I wanted to share a few golden nuggets with you to help you get more zip on your shot.

“Marrying” might not be the perfect choice of words but it means that you want to pair together your shot release with your step or stride forward.

When you’re shooting with your feet moving, there are 3 key concepts you need to understand (and execute on) in order to get maximum power in your shot.

THE ADVANTAGE OF SHOOTING OFF YOUR INSIDE LEG

Now that you understand that you can get more force down into your bottom hand and stick when you shoot off your inside leg, let’s look at why you want to marry your shot with your step (or stride). While I show an INSIDE to OUTSIDE stepping snapshot here to demonstrate, this same principle applies to shooting any type of shot.

MARRYING THE SHOT AND STEP

Another key concept to understand is throwing your upper body forward into order to get maximum power on your shot. Again, this can be used for any shot. Leaning back might get the puck up but it eliminates all the power in your shot.

THROWING YOUR UPPER BODY FORWARD

Whether you’re a…

  • D working on getting harder shots through from the point
  • A forward working on shooting in stride off the rush
  • A younger player still trying to master getting hard pucks on net in the air
  • Or a seasoned player working on deceiving the goalie with a variety of footwork patterns and fakes on your way to the net

… Marrying the shot and step is an important concept that every player needs to master no matter what their age or level!

And it’s something we’ll be working on during all 8 weeks of our TFH Summer Day Camps and Evening Skills Sessions throughout July and August. Spots are very limited in all these camps so be sure to take action soon so you don’t miss out on your chance to work with us on the ice this summer.  Click HERE for all our Summer Camp Info!

Enjoy and feel free to pass it along to any friends, teammates or coaches that might be interested in getting more zip on their shots when shooting in stride.
