Changing The Shot Angle

Changing the shot angle is a complex skill. Whether you’re stationary or moving, carrying the puck or taking it off the pass, it’s not easy – especially when you still have to shoot it around a defender, through traffic and (hopefully) past the goaltender.

We use this simple 3 part drill to start teaching our players how to change the shot angle. This video shows the forehand drag version, but the same progressions could be used for the backhand to forehand pull across the body.

Here are the 3 progressions:
1) Stationary puck and player
2) Stationary puck that player skates into
3) Player carries puck in and then changes angle

These simple drills are super easy to put into any practice since they require very little space. You can also do the exact same progression in your basement or driveway if you’re training off the ice.
