How To Fit It All In

How often do you find that you get to the end of the day and you have completely run out of time? Time to read, time to study, time to train, time to play…sometimes it is feels impossible to fit it all in.

And sometimes even the best solutions get thrown out the window…

Ever since I was in high school, I would write out a list of exactly what I wanted to get done every day. Back then, I played 3 different sports, studied as hard as I could to get into the school of my dreams, never missed an off-ice training workout and still wanted to hang out with my friends. Balancing the 3S’s: school, sports and social life was just plain hard work. I am still amazed how I fit it all in.

Even though I am no longer playing nearly as much as I used to, I find that I have even more to fit in to my day. Today was definitely one of those days for me when I needed to have that exact script of what I had to get done minute by minute. I wrote it all out last night, set time guidelines for everything and was ready to rock and roll when I got up this morning.

But by 9:30am, my whole plan went out the window.

My email server crashed. Now even though a big chunk of my business happens on-line, I can easily find something else that needs to get done while the internet issues are being fixed. But today wasn’t one of those days. I had to get messages out about a huge off-ice training seminar I am running next weekend. I have been so excited about telling everyone here in Toronto about this event that I was focused on getting the word out TODAY.

The first hour on the phone with the internet service provider went by – nothing. Three different calls in to Mac to fix the problem – still nothing. Another hour of being able to send a single email, then having the server crash, then sending one message again.

Five hours later…nothing accomplished.

I have always been a person who likes to get things done on my time. I don’t want to sit around waiting – I want to be DOING.

By 3 o’clock today, I had only gotten one thing done on my list that I really wanted to get done. Business stuff aside, I had a hard workout that I was really excited about doing (I am a little weird that way) and I hadn’t done it yet.

I had a choice – keep staring blankly at the computer screen and let my blood pressure go through the roof or go workout.

It would have been easy for me to stay at the computer and keep stressing out about my seminar announcement. I could have started writing the articles and training programs that I had scheduled for today.

But I made my choice: I had to workout. It means that I will be up later than usual tonight, will probably not have the satisfaction of being able to cross off everything on my list and will have to add it on to tomorrow’s plan.

I made my choice because ever since I was in high school, working out has been a priority. Back then it was because I knew that my willingness to work hard off the ice was what was going to separate me from everyone else on the ice. I keep doing it today because I know how much of a physical and mental edge it gives me in everything I do.

Fitting it all in can be hard and it still drives me crazy when I can’t. Try your best to do your best at all 3 S’s everyday (school, sport, social), but realize that some days, you can’t have it all.

What priorities have you set for yourself today? Did you achieve your goals? What will you do differently tomorrow to move another step closer to your dreams?

Work Hard. Dream Big.
