I remember hearing that for the first time as a young player and I honestly thought – “Yeah right”.
I believed that the game was 90+% my physical ability on the ice and maybe 10% my mental game. So I spent the majority of my time and energy focusing on my physical skills and very little on the mental game. But unlike most of the girls I played against – I did spend at least some of my time on developing the mental side of my game.

It definitely worked while I was in high school. No one else I knew spent much time on the mental game, so I definitely had an edge on them. Once I got to college, more teammates worked on it, but it still wasn’t a big part of their peak performance plan. Where I really saw a HUGE difference is when I was training out in Calgary with the national team girls. Sure – these players had terrific skills out on the ice – but their ability to stay focused, avoid distractions, build confidence and bounce back from mistakes was far superior to mine.
Because I got lazy. When I was playing out in Calgary, I was training harder than I ever had before on and off the ice. I was spending so much physical energy every day that I couldn’t imagine putting the mental energy towards setting and getting my goals. BIG mistake. Because even though I was playing at the highest level I’d ever played at, with and against the best players in the world, I didn’t have a plan on how I was going to move myself closer to my ultimate goal of making the national team. And it wasn’t until a few years later, after I retired from playing at that level, that I realized I missed out on a tremendous opportunity. I now know that if I had taken even a fraction of the time and energy I put towards the physical game and channeled it towards the mental game, I would have gotten myself that much closer to my ultimate goal.
